In March 2021, the British government published a report titled 'Global Britain in a Competitive Age: the Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy'. The report articulates the UK's strategy for national security and foreign policy going forward. It outlines the UK's fundamental national interests and core values, and indicates how these would apply to the most difficult questions the UK faces in today's international landscape.


The Review characterised China as a 'systemic challenge', a designation that could shape the UK's role in global politics for the foreseeable future. However, while the report raises potential concerns on the security front, it also pledges to maintain a constructive commercial relationship with China. What would this relationship look like, and what does this mean for British businesses in China?


Join the British Chamber and CBI for our latest UK- China dialogue, in which we are once again delighted to be joined by Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King's College London, to discuss the current state of the bilateral relationship, what implications the Integrated Review has for future cooperation and what Global Britain's new strategy means for Global China.

    Kerry Brown

    Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute

    From 2012 to 2015, he was Professor of Chinese Politics and Director of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, Australia. Prior to this, he worked at Chatham House (2006 to 2012) as Senior Fellow and then Head of the Asia Programme. Meanwhile, from 2011 to 2014, he directed the Europe China Research and Advice Network (ECRAN), giving policy advice to the European External Action Service.

    From 1998 to 2005, he worked at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, as First Secretary at the British Embassy in Beijing, and then as Head of the Indonesia, Philippine and East Timor Section. From 1994 to 1996, he lived in the Inner Mongolia region of China.

    He has a MA from Cambridge University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mandarin Chinese (Distinction) from Thames Valley University, London, and a PhD in Chinese politics and language from Leeds University.

    He is the author of over ten books on modern Chinese politics, history and language, including: The New Emperors: Power and the Princelings in China (2014); What's Wrong with Diplomacy: The Case of the UK and China (2015); Berkshire Dictionary of Chinese Biography (in Four Volumes, 2014-2015); China's CEO: Xi Jinping (2016); China's World: What Does China Want (2017).

    Chief Representative China,NE&SE Asia at Confederation of British Industry (CBI)

    Guy Dru Drury MBE is the Chief Representative for the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) in China, NE and SE Asia.

    He established the CBI’s Beijing Office in January 2006. A sinologist with more than 14 years’ experience in China and SE Asia he specializes in supporting UK and international corporates build their business and policy networks in-country and across the Asia-Pacific region.

    From 2001-2005 he worked as global business development director for two professional services firms in Shanghai and London. Guy’s career has seen him work in a variety of sectors and industries ranging from inward investment to consultancy both in the UK and China. He lived in Chengdu, South West China, from 1998-2000 where he was a partner in a private consultancy and following a year in London he relocated to China in 2005. Guy qualified from Leeds University with a BA in Modern Chinese Studies in 1991 and has a postgraduate diploma in Advanced Chinese from Teachers University (Taipei).

    Guy was awarded an MBE for services to UK-China business in June 2017.
