The British Business in China: Member Sentiment Survey 2019/2020 is the second public survey of British businesses in China. Over 200 of our members were asked to provide their reflections on their business experience in 2019 and their outlook on 2020.


The 2018/19 Survey showed that the three most critical issues facing British businesses were:


  • Cybersecurity requirements.
  • Intellectual property protection.
  • Licensing restrictions.

    Nicholas Holt

    Asia Pacific Head of Research at Knight Frank (Shanghai) Property Consultants

    Nicholas leads Knight Frank’s research platform across the Asia-Pacific region. His role includes co-ordinating research teams, tracking market performance and producing market commentary and reports. His special areas of interest within the field include government policy and intervention, cycle analysis, and intra-regional capital flows.

    Nicholas has a large amount of international experience, dealing with a wide range of research and consultancy projects in the UK, mainland Europe, and throughout Asia-Pacific.

    He joined Knight Frank in 2010, previously heading up the research and consultancy division in Vietnam. In this role he advised both domestic and international clients on a wide range of issues and projects, carrying out project feasibility studies, highest and best use analysis, providing development recommendations and master planning consultancy.

    Prior to this, he worked for Jones Lang LaSalle in France where he was responsible for valuation and value related advisory for a large number of English and non-English speaking institutional investors, corporate clients and developers. Work included regular pan European advisory work across France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Poland and Hungary.

    Educated at the London School of Economics (LSE), with a BSc in Economics, Nicholas went on to study for a Masters (MA) in Town and Country Planning from the University of Sheffield and a postgraduate diploma (PGDip) in Surveying from the University of Reading. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS).

    John has over 25 years’ international communications consultancy experience in various parts of the world. He has been in China for fourteen years.
    He established North Head in 2010, and formerly was held regional roles at Weber Shandwick for Asia and Europe.
    John is a member of the multinational business advisory committee of APEC China Business Council. North Head is strategic counsellor and partner for the Global Times Business Leaders’ Forum. In 2008, he was adviser and trainer at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in preparation for Japan’s chairmanship of the G8.
    For ten years from 1989 he was executive director at the American Chamber to the European Union in Brussels.

    Amanda’s has expertise in the acquisition of well-known trade mark recognition, advising on the registrability of non-traditional trade marks (sound marks, color-combination marks, certification marks, and geographic indications), trade mark transactions, licensing, as well as integrating IPR protection strategies with portfolio management.
    Her client base spans multi-national companies in industries such as pharmaceuticals, technology and machinery, food and beverage, real estate, education and fashion. She also provides strategies for Chinese clients on global IP management.
    Amanda gives presentations on IP rights at events organized by various Trade Commissions and business associations, including the EU Chamber of Commerce in China. She writes for a number of legal publications, such as Managing Intellectual Property, China Law and Practice, China Intellectual Property.

    Maggie (Pengling) Yin is Data Strategy Officer in China at RELX who is also responsible for government affairs, and data security and privacy protection. RELX Group is a global provider of information and analytics for professional and business customers across industries. Maggie used to be working for Ministry of Commerce, has rich experiences on information technology and application as a regulator and policy-maker. She has pointed by Ministry of Commerce to the Chinese Embassy to the Netherland as the second secretary for four years with responsible for international trade and investment cooperation.
