Dr. Jane Goodall DBE
Dr. Jane Goodall is the world's foremost primatologist, as well as leading figure in the conservation movement. In 1960 Dr. Goodall embarked on a mission to study chimpanzees in the wild. Starting in Gombe National Park in Tanzania, Jane has accumulated over 59 years of experience studying Chimpanzees in the wild. In 1966 Dr. Goodall wrote a ground-breaking thesis, "Behaviour of free-living chimpanzees", which was the first scientific study to take in to account the individual personalities of chimpanzees. Since Dr. Goodall's study increasingly animals are viewed as sentient individuals, whose lives are of great value. During Dr. Goodall's time studying primates in the wilds of Africa, she witnessed large scale destruction of their natural habitats, as well as relentless the hunting of chimpanzees for food and medicine. With the existence of chimpanzees at threat, Dr. Goodall has dedicated her life to protecting chimpanzees, and educating the public about these incredible creatures.
"Jane" The Documentary
Produced by National Geographic and released in September 2017. 'Jane' documents the early life and work of Dr. Goodall, as she struggled in a male dominated scientific community to overcome widely held misbeliefs about the behavior of primates, leading to a revolution in the way we view nature today. The film exploits a trove of never-before-seen footage shot at the time by cameraman and husband Hugo Van Lawick. Directed by Brett Morgen, who has previously documented such figures as Kurt Cobain and the Rolling Stones, from release, the documentary has received much acclaim, including winning two Emmy's alongside a BAFTA nomination.
