The British Chamber of Commerce in China are launching the first Wellbeing Report this March. From surveying over 350 working professionals across Mainland China, we find that stress brought about from the workplace and personal lives impact their happiness, their performance, and chances of remaining with their organisation.

Around 40% of employees feel that they cannot tell their company about the pressures they are under without hurting their career. 60% put themselves at risk of burnout, and 43% consider leaving their job specifically due to a stressful working environment. Women seem to face significant wellbeing challenges, and report poorer levels of mental health than men. The Covid-19 pandemic has unsurprisingly posed significant pressure in the workplace, particularly in the education sector, whereby 70% of the employees report feeling high levels of anxiety and 40% with depression.

  • What should companies do to create a safe channel to support employees faced with issues of mental health in China?
  • How can we encourage open communications to avoid a burnt out, stressed and anxious workforce?
  • What can we learn from companies with existing wellbeing initiatives and check-in mechanisms with employees?

We invite HR experts and wellness champions to discuss the steps that are needed to make a difference.
