FULLER's works normally investigate the identity of places with the artist depicting topographies and cultures through urban and rural exploration, extensive research, local knowledge, and lived experience. He best known for his series ‘Purposeful Wanderings’: a decades-long journey, both physical and creative, to document his understanding of the world through his art, and with a particular focus on our emotional connection to place. Popular pieces in the series include London Town (2005-2015); Bristol (2014); and Beijing (2018).
His prints have been acquired by The British Library, Museum of London, and Bristol Museum & Art Gallery for their permanent collections. He has exhibited at the likes of Art Beijing, the Royal College of Art, and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Beijing is currently on display at The British Ambassador’s Residence, China.
He currently lives in China and his most recent, notable work, is Tourist Map of Pyongyang, a new addition to the ‘Purposeful Wanderings’ series.
Event Details
British artist, Gareth Fuller, spent 14 days in enforced home quarantine in Beijing. Typically the artist wanders for hundreds of miles, exploring, and getting the feel of a place to create his art. However, after the quarantine was announced, he realised his only option to expel creativity would be to draw what was happening in his apartment and mind. It was ironic that an artist who spends so much time walking as part of his process would now be trapped indoors.
During the quarantine he created a series of artworks titled The Quarantine Maps. The entire experience left him feeling worried and helpless, so he decided to keep drawing and created a Quarantine + Pandemic Survival Map to tackle the hard truths with consideration and humour.
