On 26 May 2021, the British Chambers of Commerce in China will announce the official position of the membership on the core challenges facing them in 2021.

The past year has seen extraordinary challenges in UK-China relations and shrinking interest in the robust engagement needed to overcome our differences and fully action our common interests.

At the same time, the 14th Five-Year Plan marks a new phase of green, self-confident growth for the Chinese economy. But contradictory or vague policy directions, especially around SOEs and further opening to foreign investment, signal continued challenges on the horizon.

Nevertheless there are still clear paths to crossing the divide between the UK and China. This year marks COP 26 in Glasgow and COP 15 in Kunming. The UK and China have a singular opportunity to coordinate on climate action. British businesses in China can support these net zero emissions goals with impactful initiatives and knowledge-sharing.
